SpaceX is moving into Cajun country — and it's bringing a housewarming gift.

Alongside this week's blockbuster announcement of Starbase Louisiana — the company's planned $100 billion Starship spaceport on the Gulf Coast — SpaceX confirmed that residents of Vermilion Parish will get 50% off Starlink Residential service.

The discount applies to both new and existing customers on eligible monthly Residential plans, and new signups pay no upfront hardware costs. In practice, that means households in the parish can get a Starlink kit with nothing down and half the usual monthly bill — a meaningful perk in a rural coastal region where wired broadband options are often limited. The neighborhood in question

The offer lands on the heels of what state officials are calling the largest capital investment in Louisiana history. On August 25, 2026, SpaceX and Governor Jeff Landry unveiled Starbase Louisiana, a roughly 125,000-acre spaceport to be built near Pecan Island, about 50 miles south of Lafayette.

The site will be SpaceX's fourth and largest launch facility — a self-sustaining campus designed to support thousands of Starship launches per year. At full buildout, it is expected to include:

- Five launch complexes with 10 launch pads
- On-site propellant production and power generation
- Deep-water shipping access and vehicle processing facilities
- Residential housing for employees and their families
Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with the first launch targeted as early as 2029.

More than just cheap internet

The Starlink discount is one piece of a broader package for SpaceX's new neighbors:

- $25 million per year paid to Vermilion Parish for 25 years — in lieu of traditional taxes
- A $20 million upfront payment, pushing direct local payments past $820 million over the life of the deal
- A $25 million charitable donation to the Community Foundation of Acadiana
- An estimated 3,000 direct jobs averaging $92,600 per year — with Musk suggesting the total could climb toward 10,000
SpaceX took a similar community-first approach as it grew Starbase, Texas, and the Louisiana version starts with the simplest gesture a satellite internet company can make: cutting its neighbors' bills in half before the first launch tower ever rises out of the marsh.
