Tesla Energy and Sunrun staged the largest residential virtual power plant event in history, delivering 580 megawatts to the California grid by coordinating output from Powerwalls and other distributed batteries.

Of that total, 517 MW came from 110,000 Powerwalls across the state. Tesla Energy noted that roughly 69,000 Powerwall owners were dispatching more than 500 MW during the event, which occurred as the region faced a heatwave. "Equivalent to the output of a power plant, but from Powerwalls already in people's homes," Tesla Energy wrote on X, highlighting how the distributed network functioned as centralized generation capacity at peak demand.

The event underscores Tesla's strategy of using home battery systems and aggregation to support grid stability, particularly during extreme weather when electricity demand spikes.

"The largest residential virtual power plant event in history Combining output from Powerwalls and other batteries, Tesla and @Sunrun delivered 580 MW to the grid – 517 MW of that came from 110,000 Powerwalls across California Quoting @teslaenergy: “~69,000 Powerwall owners across California are currently dispatching more than 500 MW to the grid, helping meet peak demand during today's heatwave "— X · @teslaenergy
