"Tesla is urging the Australian government to accelerate its autonomous vehicle regulations and start vehicle trials on public roads in 2027 (from 2029), arguing that doing so could save hundreds of lives, prevent thousands of injuries, and unlock more than $10 billion in economic and safety benefits.

Tesla says its vehicles have now driven over 160 million kilometers (~100 million miles) using FSD (Supervised) in Australia and New Zealand since launching in September 2025.

Tesla added that drivers using FSD have experienced:
• 40% fewer collisions
• 90% fewer harsh braking incidents
• 86% fewer harsh acceleration incidents

Tesla: "Australian road fatalities sadly hit a 15-year high in 2025, advanced driver-assistance systems and autonomous vehicle technology now provide one of the most consequential opportunities to drive a step change reduction in lives lost and injuries on Australian roads."

Quoting @kianchong: “🚨 Breaking: Tesla has formally asked Australia's Senate to back driverless car trials on public roads in 2027, and to fast-track the AV law from 2029

Its pitch:
• 160 million km on FSD (Supervised) across AU/NZ since Sep 2025
• Bringing the law forward 2 years could unlock over A$10 billion in benefits
• AVs could save up to 800 lives a year at full adoption

Worth watching how this pans out given the same right-hand drive as us and Waymo entry too
