Tesla Energy, Sunrun deploy 140,000 batteries in California grid event
Home battery storage system provided 580 MW of power during peak demand, the largest residential distributed power event recorded in the U.S.

On September 9, as California faced extreme heat and surging energy demand, Sunrun and Tesla Energy dispatched more than 140,000 home batteries to deliver 580 megawatts of peak power to the state's grid. The coordinated event marked the largest residential distributed power plant dispatch ever recorded in the United States.
The capacity deployed was substantial enough to power every household in Sacramento County during peak hours. By injecting that power into the grid, the dispatch increased the state's operating margin and helped reduce real-time energy prices across California.
Through grid service programs including DSGS and ELRP, distributed home storage and solar systems are contributing beyond backup power for individual families. The systems help stabilize the grid and reduce demand for expensive new infrastructure like poles, wires, and peaker power plants. Homeowners participating in these programs receive compensation for the grid services their batteries provide, according to Sunrun's account.
