Model Y owner: Full Self-Driving now a 'personal Waymo'
A Tesla driver who switched to BMW for three years says the latest FSD is dramatically better than early versions.
A Model Y owner who recently returned to Tesla after driving a BMW for three years says the latest version of Full Self-Driving is fundamentally different from what he experienced in 2017. "I just bought a new Model Y and can confidently say cars and Teslas are no longer the same product," the driver posted on X, contrasting traditional vehicles with Tesla's autonomous capabilities.
The owner described his first Model 3 from 2017 as having FSD that was "basically slightly better cruise control" and felt "oversold." But after testing the current system, he said it now works as advertised. "I had one of the first Model 3s in 2017. FSD was basically slightly better cruise control. Great on the highway. But honestly felt oversold," he wrote, before adding of the new version: "holy shit — it's a personal Waymo. Works perfectly."
He recounted a concrete example: picking up his new car at Tesla's Fremont factory, entering his home address 30 miles away, and completing the journey without touching the controls. The owner suggested most people remain skeptical because they've only experienced early FSD versions, comparing the gap to the leap from GPT-3.5 to modern AI systems.
"As Jensen would say, “We are not a car” Quoting @arampell: “I just bought a new Model Y and can confidently say cars and Teslas are no longer the same product. A car is like a pony or horse. I still like driving a stick shift, it’s fun! Tesla with FSD is a transportation robot. I had one of the first Model 3s in 2017. FSD was basically slightly better cruise control. Great on the highway. But "— X · @aelluswamy
