Cybercab fleet model ditches onboard charger to cut costs
Tesla's robotaxi omits AC charging capability as a cost and durability trade-off for fleet-only operation.

Tesla's Cybercab fleet variant does not support AC charging and lacks an onboard charger (OBC), according to remarks from Kyle Conner on X. The design choice appears intentional: "for fleet only, there's no OBC - which is kind of cool for cost / durability optimization," Conner noted.
The omission reflects a different operational model from consumer vehicles. Fleet robotaxis charging exclusively via DC fast charging at depot locations eliminates the need for the complexity and expense of onboard AC conversion hardware. Conner suggested that if Tesla ever releases a consumer version of the Cybercab, such a charger would likely become necessary to support home and public AC charging infrastructure.
The decision underscores Tesla's approach to the robotaxi as a purpose-built commercial asset rather than a consumer product, prioritizing operational efficiency and manufacturing simplicity over the charging flexibility typical of private ownership.
