69,000 California Powerwall owners dispatch 500 MW during heatwave

Approximately 69,000 Powerwall owners across California are currently contributing more than 500 MW to the grid during today's heatwave, according to Tesla Energy. The company framed the effort in stark terms: "Equivalent to the output of a power plant, but from Powerwalls already in people's homes."

The dispatch represents a real-time example of distributed energy resources helping meet peak demand. By aggregating battery storage from residential installations, Tesla is able to coordinate a response comparable to traditional generation infrastructure—except the capacity already exists within customer homes rather than requiring new centralized facilities.

This type of grid support has become more common as battery storage adoption grows and grid operators seek alternatives to manage peak periods. The scale of today's contribution underscores both the growing installed base of Powerwalls in California and the feasibility of coordinating that capacity at meaningful levels.
